Surfing Rides the Wave into Hawaii High School Athletics

In a landmark decision, the Hawaii High School Athletic Association (HHSAA) has announced that surfing will become an official state championship sport beginning in spring 2026. This move integrates Hawaii’s rich surfing heritage into the high school athletic framework, offering students a unique opportunity to compete in a sport deeply rooted in the islands’ culture.

Embracing Cultural Heritage

Surfing, often referred to as the ‘sport of kings,’ has been an integral part of Hawaiian culture for centuries. By incorporating surfing into the high school sports roster, the HHSAA acknowledges and honors this tradition, providing a platform for young athletes to engage with their heritage while promoting physical activity and competition.

Competition Structure

The inaugural state championships are scheduled to take place on May 1-2, 2026, at Hoʻokipa Beach Park on Maui. The competition will feature three disciplines: shortboard, longboard, and bodyboard, with events for both boys and girls. This inclusive approach ensures that a wide range of student-athletes can participate, regardless of their preferred surfing style.

School Participation

High schools across all five of Hawaii’s interscholastic leagues—the Oahu Interscholastic Association, Interscholastic League of Honolulu, Big Island Interscholastic Federation, Maui Interscholastic League, and Kauai Interscholastic Federation—are encouraged to form surfing teams. Schools interested in participating must declare their intent by October 1, 2025, to ensure adequate preparation and organization for the upcoming season.

Looking Ahead

The inclusion of surfing as an official high school sport is expected to have a positive impact on student engagement and community involvement. It offers students a new avenue to develop athletic skills, discipline, and teamwork, while also fostering a deeper connection to Hawaii’s cultural identity. As the 2026 season approaches, schools, students, and communities are gearing up to ride this exciting new wave in high school athletics.
