As residents of Honolulu, we are witnessing firsthand the effects of climate change, particularly through rising sea levels. Understanding these changes and their implications is crucial for our community’s resilience.
Projected Sea Level Rise
According to the Hawaiʻi Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation Commission, sea levels in Hawaiʻi are projected to rise by approximately 8 inches by 2050 and up to 3.5 feet by 2100. This increase is expected to exacerbate coastal flooding and erosion, impacting our homes, infrastructure, and natural resources. Source
Local Impacts
In Honolulu, areas like Waikīkī are particularly vulnerable. Research from the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa indicates that much of Honolulu and Waikīkī are at risk of groundwater inundation, where rising sea levels lift the water table above the ground surface, leading to flooding. Source
Community Response
In response to these challenges, the City and County of Honolulu adopted the Climate Ready Oʻahu strategy in February 2024. This plan outlines 12 strategies and 57 actions aimed at preparing and protecting our island community from climate change impacts. Source
